The plum blossom (ume) flowering beneath snow or frost represents triumph in the face of adversity. Together with pine (matsu) and bamboo (take) the plum is part of a motif called the 'Three Friends of Winter' which represent good fortune. The haori has a white silk lining with pink printed traditional Japanese flowers: plum, chrysanthemum, bamboo.
Chuu hitta kanoko shibori is made by binding tiny sections of light-weight silk with thread to produce the design before dyeing. With chuu hitta kanoko the edges of the squares are not crisp and the circles in the middle are of varying size.
