A vintage blue mens silk haori with a striped printed hyotan bottle design lining.

Hyotan gourds were shaped while growing to make a convenient tokkuri (sake flask) and could be worn suspended from an obi sash when travelling or picnicking informally.

Tsumugi was originally a peasant cloth made from left-over silk threads, but because of its artisanal nature it is now one of the most highly prized and expensive kimono fabrics. Although tsumugi is only considered suitable for informal occasions, as traditional Japanese aesthetics value understatement it would be appreciated for its unobtrusive expense.
