A mens vintage doro oshima tsumugi silk kimono with a fine all-over kikkō or fortune hexagon kasuri design and a plain midnight blue silk lining. The kikkō pattern comes from the hexagonal pattern on a tortoiseshell and is considered auspicious, symbolizing longevity and good fortune.
Tsumugi was originally a peasant cloth made from left-over silk threads, but because of its artisanal nature it is now one of the most highly prized and expensive kimono fabrics. Although tsumugi is only considered suitable for informal occasions, as traditional Japanese aesthetics value understatement it would be appreciated for its unobtrusive expense.
