An beautiful vintage silk kimono with a kaleidescopic array of traditional patterns, flowers and birds in shades of mauve, burnt orange, green, ochre & chocolate on a cream background.
This very pretty kimono has a complex print designed around hanakuitori - 'flower-eating birds', a motif that was adopted from Chinese art. If you look carefully you will see shikishi featuring the mythical phoenix hidden in amongst the peonies & chrysanthemums, as well as crane motifs, bamboo leaves and other traditional flowers. The kimono has an off-white silk inner and a red ombre silk hakkake (the inner cuff and hem of the lining).
Shikishi are a special type of square card or paper used in Japan for writing poems and drawing illustrations. They are often represented in textile prints as square or rectangular motifs containing a picture that is separate to the background design.
