Boat on the Waves

A dusky pink being bokashi vintage silk haori with a fine line design all-over of a traditional boat cresting wild waves. Water and especially waves are a common motif in Japanese textile design and the wild waves of the sea (araumi) represent power and resilience.

The haori has an cream rinzu silk lining with an all-over pattern of egasumi (clouds) and leaf sprigs and is closed with pink & white ombre silk hiimo ties. Rinzu is a silk damask fabric in which a subtle, repeat satin pattern is woven onto a matte background. 

Bokashi is Japanese term for ‘shading’ and originates in woodblock printmaking where variations in a single colour is achieved by hand applying a gradation of ink, rather than inking the block uniformly.
